Got a call from a London number I didn’t recognise. Didn’t pick up and they didn’t leave a voicemail either.

Beware, it's a con! It appears that some software is auto-dialling a batch of numbers to identify which are active lines. If you happen to pick up and say "Hello" or utter anything at all, your number gets logged as a valid contact. Then, it ends up in the hands of scammers who will try to pull a fast one on you! So, if you get a call from a number you don’t recognise, don’t engage right away; just remain silent and allow the caller to make the first move. After that, you can decide whether to respond or simply hang up. Stay alert and treat all unfamiliar calls as potential scams!

I received a phone call from a chap named James Caldwell, who claimed to be representing a recruitment agency regarding a trainee accountant position. He proceeded to outline the responsibilities tied to the job and posed several queries about my candidacy for the role. After discussing the position and my suitability, he mentioned that while he had perused my CV, my experience was somewhat lacking. Consequently, I would need to complete a training course prior to being offered a full-time contract, complete with comprehensive ACCA study funding and an enticing starting salary of £25,000 per annum. However, he stipulated that this training came at a hefty price of £2,500, requiring a £900 upfront deposit. Naturally, I expressed my concerns about the possibility of this being a scam. He reassured me, insisting that he wouldn't touch the fees as he was merely an intermediary for a recruitment firm, and urged me to make a swift decision as they were keen to fill the positions urgently. Once we hung up, he sent over some documents that contradicted his verbal claims entirely. It turned out he was affiliated with a training provider named Bradstone Allington-not a recruitment agency as he had stated. Rather than a definitive job placement after training, the paperwork indicated only employment assistance, estimating a salary range of £20,000 to £25,000 per year, which starkly differed from his earlier promises of guaranteed employment.

Without a doubt, this is a dodgy operation. They somehow acquired my CV and were pushing an online course while dangling the prospect of working beneath a senior staff member. They incessantly probed, asking if "this position genuinely appeals to you," as if assessing whether I was a suitable target they'd actually bother with. It really feels like they’re on the hunt for someone to exploit.

Fraudulent seller!

I recently received a call from this number regarding a paralegal role that I can't recall applying for. Has anyone else had experience with them? Any idea what the company or firm might be?

Suspicious phone call received. I was contacted by a firm claiming to have opportunities in their accounts division, but they insisted on an upfront payment of £2000 with a 10% deposit. They pressured me to decide immediately because they had an interview set for tomorrow and the selection process was supposedly wrapping up in just 20 minutes. Sounds rather dodgy to me!
