Tonight I got a couple of calls from this number, both coming in less than 10 minutes apart. On the second one, all I heard was a whistle blasted into the phone!

They rang up claiming to be from the local newspaper, asking to verify our address so they could confirm we’d been getting the paper. Foolishly, my husband gave our address out. Now, I’m bracing myself for an endless wave of spam calls, from all sorts, since our info will surely get passed around. Honestly, why isn’t the government cracking down on these scammers? It’s an invasion of privacy and outright theft of personal information. We’re ex-directory and registered with the TPS, but it clearly means jack all. I had a call centre from India trying to flog me PPI, telling me they got my info from some ancient BT database they’d acquired and could use. I’m thinking of changing my number now. If BT try to charge me for that, they’re in for a shock.

At about 7.45pm this number gave me a ring. I have caller ID so I didn’t pick up, but after my voicemail message played, the caller kept saying "hello, hello" quite a few times. I’m with TalkTalk, so I used 14258 to block the number from contacting me again. I’ve found that setting my answerphone to only start after two rings has really helped reduce the amount of annoying robotic calls I get.

I've had a few calls from this number recently. The last time, the bloke claimed he was from Thomson Reuters and was checking details about my business. I told him to just look it up on Companies House if he’s after any info, but he insisted he’d already done that and just wanted me to confirm. I wasn’t having any of it and told him to jog on. For the past couple of weeks, this number has been ringing us almost daily. We run a business, and the caller claims they want to find out how we discovered our current location. It’s a cold call, and each time I tell them to take us off their list - they always say they will but never follow through. Today, I finally got a company name, MG Data Monitoring, and the man I spoke with admitted he was working from an offshore call centre. Usually, the caller introduces himself as "Brils", but sometimes a woman calls instead. These calls have come through both our main switchboard and a direct number.
