Someone called saying they were from Virgin Media saying there was an issue with my internet. I told them my broadband was fine and I didn’t need any help, and they just cut the call straight away. The person had a really strong Indian accent that was hard to understand, which made me doubt them right away. It was obvious it was a dodgy call, just not a very clever scam.

Got a call from someone saying they were Virgin Media and could fix my slow internet. They talked me through a bunch of tech stuff and even had me put some apps on both my phone and laptop. They claimed I was entitled to a big refund and set up a time to swap my router. It all sounded really legit. But when they asked for my bank password through an app they'd told me to download to approve the refund, I hung up. Normally, I’m pretty clued up about online scams but this was nearly clever enough to catch me out! Watch out for this lot!

When I asked if they could just put the money back into the same account they took it from, they said no, they need to check my bank details first. Got a call from a woman with an Asian accent claiming to be from something like 'I-Smart,' saying I had a PPI refund due. Thing is, we cleared our mortgage ages ago and I never had PPI to begin with. I wasn’t having any of it and told her straight away that her story sounded dodgy and it was obviously a scam. She asked, “How do you know that?” then said “I don’t want your bank details.” I kept telling her I knew this was fraud and that I’d be ending the call. She snapped back with “Shut up! Listen to me!” before I finally hung up on her.

So early this morning, around 8, I got a call from a woman called Stella, sounded like she was Asian. She claimed they were going to give me a refund on tax I supposedly paid over the last few years. She even used my name and had my address, which was a bit unsettling. I let her talk on until she asked for my bank info. Then I told her I haven’t paid tax in ages and that it was obviously a scam. So this woman rang me up saying she was aware of my full name and where I lived. She claimed I'd got a tax refund because of some tax paid on a PPI refund. Then she asked for my bank details, both sort code and account number. I said I'd rather have a cheque sent through the post, but she insisted that wasn’t possible. When I asked her where she was located, she said somewhere in central London. I told her I'd come by to pick it up myself, but she denied that too. Once I mentioned I was with the police, she just hung up straight away.

He mentioned they were based in Northampton, but the call came from a 020 number, which I thought was London. He asked to check my address, then wanted my IBAN number. I told him no way and when I said it was private info, he tried to say it wasn't sensitive. I stood firm and demanded details about the refund in writing. Turns out, he had no clue about the claim or the company involved in it!
