They presented themselves as Virgin Media, promising to enhance my sluggish broadband connection. The conversation involved a lot of technical jargon, and they persuaded me to download various applications onto both my computer and phone, insisting that I was entitled to a substantial refund. We arranged for them to come round and swap out my router. It all seemed rather credible. However, the moment they requested my banking password through an app they had me install to process the supposed refund, I realised something was amiss and ended the call. Normally, I consider myself quite savvy online and cautious, but I nearly fell for this scam! Take heed, everyone!

When I asked if they could just put the money back into the same account they took it from, they said no, they need to check my bank details first. Got a call from a woman with an Asian accent claiming to be from something like 'I-Smart,' saying I had a PPI refund due. Thing is, we cleared our mortgage ages ago and I never had PPI to begin with. I’ve just had a call from this lot. They claim that an excessive amount was deducted from my bank when I purchased a warranty for my washing machine. Oddly enough, I never buy warranties! She didn’t blink an eye at my disbelief and kept insisting they owed me money. When she requested my bank details, I mentioned I’d prefer a cheque instead. She asked, “How do you know that?” then said “I don’t want your bank details.” I kept telling her I knew this was fraud and that I’d be ending the call. She snapped back with “Shut up! Listen to me!” before I finally hung up on her.

He mentioned they were based in Northampton, but the call came from a 020 number, which I thought was London. He asked to check my address, then wanted my IBAN number. I told him no way and when I said it was private info, he tried to say it wasn't sensitive. I stood firm and demanded details about the refund in writing.
