When I probed for more details on why they needed that information, he responded they were conducting a promotion. I informed him that I wasn't keen on taking part and decided to end the conversation.

It struck me as eerily similar to a call I got the previous day from someone claiming to be from 'EE'. Without a second thought, I hung up and promptly blocked the number.
