It was an automated woman speaking in a fake American accent, saying she was from HMRC and that I had to ring them back right away or else face lawyers if I didn’t reply. Got a call earlier today from some automated voice sounding Asian, claiming to be HMRC - pretty clear that was a load of rubbish. Later on at about half past four, another ring came through. I've been inundated with voicemails for an entire week! Decided to call the number back, and it turned out to be someone claiming to be from the tax office. They insisted I owe a whopping £3000, threatening that if I didn’t settle today, my case would end up in court and I'd end up having to fork out £19000! To add to that, they mentioned my benefits would be halted, bailiffs would come to my home, and my debit card would be blocked. When I explained that I simply don’t have the funds, they said they'd give me a couple of hours to scrape together the cash before ringing me again. When I requested some written confirmation detailing the tax owed, they claimed they're not permitted to send anything in writing. This just smells like a scam to me!
