Yesterday, I got hit with two dodgy calls back to back. I just hung up straight away coz it felt suspicious. I blocked the first number, but then another call came through from a similar one, and I blocked that too. It’s mad how these scammers keep changing numbers and there’s nothing stopping them. Message from a dubious source: “Hello FirstName, this is a matter of utmost urgency. Officer Janet Woords from HMRC speaking here. Please take note of the direct line to my office: 02038960012, that’s 02038960012. It’s crucial that you do not ignore this communication and get in touch with us posthaste. If we don’t receive a response from you or your legal representative, be prepared for serious repercussions. Farewell, and do take care of yourself.” I dialled the number back to clarify how they identified themselves as HMRC, as the incoming call on my mobile displayed 0345 300 3943. They alleged that I was under investigation due to an internal audit which concluded I had intentionally attempted to cheat HMRC out of £4,790 for the tax years spanning 2014 to 2018. They mentioned there would be court action against me, citing four specific allegations: Breach of Regulations, Tax Evasion, Theft, and another vague charge. It was quite distressing, but I wrapped up the call and consulted my accountant who assured me it reeked of a Scam/Phishing attempt.
