He kept saying stuff like ‘Court House’ and ‘County’, really American phraseology, so I knew he was bullshitting. When I told him to send the ‘Collection Agents’ over, he hung up sharpish. Got a few calls from this number, and they left some voicemail messages. I only got around to calling back today. A guy with an Indian-American accent, who said his name was Robert Smith (immediately sounded dodgy), gave me a case number and even a badge number. He told me I’m being charged with deliberate tax fraud and that the police would be arresting me within 24 hours - nice of them to give me a heads-up! He somehow had not just my phone number and name, but also my email and an old home address from a couple of years ago. I nearly fell for it, so I rang up HMRC and they confirmed it was a scam. Then I thought, if they really planned to send cops round to arrest me, wouldn’t using an old address be a rubbish plan anyway?

I just got a call from this number, with someone saying they were from HMRC about some legal trouble with my taxes. The background noise made it seem like a call centre, and the caller had an Indian accent. It all seemed pretty convincing at first, so I played along. Just like loads of folks have said, I got this automated message saying I was under some sort of HMRC fraud probe. I rang back and spoke to a bloke who said he was the one dealing with it. When I told him I was doubtful, he said he’d prove who he was by giving me his ID right then and there over the phone! That seemed fishy to me. From what I know, HMRC doesn’t do “investigations” over the phone, they carry out “compliance checks” and always send letters through the post first, like others have mentioned.

I started questioning him about how he even got my phone number since HMRC never had it. He asked me for my case number but I told him I didn’t have one because I hadn’t received any official brown envelope with the HMRC stamp. I kept pressing him on where he got my number from, and then, out of nowhere, he just hung up on me! Proper dodgy behaviour.
