Got a ring from some woman who barely spoke English, said she was from HMRC but sounded like a total muppet. She tried being all threatening but it was just obvious nonsense. Definitely a scam, don’t get caught out!

I got a recorded call saying I’m being sued for unpaid taxes! Absolutely ridiculous. I hung up right away, but I can’t even begin to think how terrified someone on their own, who’s not great with money, might feel. I’m used to getting calls every day about some accident I supposedly caused, but this feels like they’re taking it to a whole new level. It’s wrong for these scammers to just barge into people’s lives like this. Surely there’s a way to track them down and stop it?

If you’ve got caller ID, an answerphone or even wifi, I’d suggest not picking up on calls from numbers you don’t know. Honestly, no scammer ever leaves a voicemail saying 'we're out to cheat you', but recently there was a case where they actually threatened legal action. You can always look the number up online first, most times other people have already flagged it as a dodgy call.

I got a voicemail on my answerphone and when I phoned back, some bloke with an Indian accent said I had debts with HMRC. He went on for a good couple of minutes threatening me if I didn’t settle up. When he asked for my National Insurance number, I told him if he was legit he’d already have it. He immediately hung up after that. Pretty obvious scam, so don’t give out any personal info!

My wife got a call from some bloke called "Charles Robinson," who said he was from the legal team at HMRC, chasing unpaid taxes. He had a strong West African accent and kept pestering even after my husband got on the phone. When my husband said "I aint your slave," the guy got really defensive. We ended the call sharpish. Then I rang back and warned him I’d track him down. Not a word after that - proper coward!

During the afternoon, I got a call on my landline but didn’t answer because I have an answerphone set up. I really wish the authorities could catch these idiots who just scare folks, but I’m not holding my breath. It sounds like they’re using an overseas number that forwards the call through a London line to reach people. I’m already registered with the TPS, but these scammers just don’t seem to care at all.

Honestly, don’t let this stress you out - it’s just a scam. HMRC doesn’t just call you randomly like that. I got one of these calls recently and it was quite ridiculous. If there was a genuine issue with your taxes, HMRC would send you a letter or contact your workplace first. Never press 1 or call back the number. If possible, block it and move on.

Yeah, same here - I dropped a comment right after yours, but they don’t seem to care at all. I reckon they’ve just got a big list of numbers and are calling everyone on it. They asked me how much I could pay, and when I said £50 tomorrow, they just laughed and hung up. Luckily, I didn’t share any bank info but was left feeling shocked and quite upset. This morning about 11:52, I got a call from this number claiming to be from HMRC. They told me I supposedly had a court order for £937 due to unpaid tax from 1995 to 2010. But I'd been on the PAYE system for those years, so the employer was supposed to sort the tax, not me. When I said this, the caller kept arguing, but when I mentioned I'd consult my solicitor and HMRC, the call was suddenly cut off. Just a heads up, don’t share any bank details. After checking with HMRC, they said this is likely a scam and advised reporting it on 0300 123 2040.
