I received a voicemail on my BT1571, but there was no indication of who it was from. It was an automated call mentioning that there’s a case filed against me and instructed me to ring back to reach the case officer. Quite concerning, to say the least!

Today I had a rather peculiar phone call, much like what others have described. The person on the other end requested my National Insurance number, which struck me as quite odd since I wasn’t even sure who I was speaking to. When I pressed for clarification, he bluntly remarked that I could simply hang up, and that he’d arrange for the police to pay me a visit. Naturally, I took his advice and ended the call. It was rather unsettling, and I couldn’t help but notice his accent, which seemed to be Indian. Later, I tried ringing back only to be met with a voicemail in an American accent, informing me he was unavailable and to leave my name and number for a return call. Quite the mystery, isn’t it?

I keep getting these robo calls saying I owe money to HMRC and to press 1. It’s so annoying, especially since I pay loads for my landline. You’d think Virgin and the others would do something to stop all these scam calls as they’re not just a nuisance but could be dangerous too. When will they sort this out?

Today, I had a rather alarming call from the number mentioned above, claiming to be from HMRC. They stated that I was being issued a writ for underpaying taxes to the tune of £687, covering the years from 1980 to 2016. To make matters worse, they threatened me with penalties amounting to £46,000 and a potential five-year prison sentence! It's incredibly infuriating that anyone can level such baseless allegations without consequence. Those responsible for these sorts of threats should find themselves behind bars instead. And if they aren’t even from the UK, they ought to be reported back to their own countries to face the music! I often find myself wishing I could confront these individuals and express just how despicable their actions are!

I got home after a long day at work, just about midnight. I pay my taxes like everyone else. My husband looked really stressed and told me HMRC were supposedly starting legal action against us. He’s not the best with these things. It’s infuriating how these scammers bother hardworking people who actually pay their dues. Why can’t they be stopped? He’s spent the whole night anxious, thinking we might owe something. We actually don’t - if anything, they owe us. Best thing to do if you pick up is just hang up. I’m definitely blocking this number.

This definitely isn’t HMRC. If it was a real issue, they’d either send you an official letter or get the police involved for serious matters. Don’t hand over any info to these scammers, you’ll just end up getting conned. I tried asking a guy who claimed to be my “case officer” which HMRC office he was based in, but he couldn’t say. When I told him he wasn’t from HMRC and was just trying to scam people, he immediately cut the call.
