When I dialed 1471, it came back saying "the number isn't currently active" - that usually rings alarm bells for dodgy callers. I decided to ring the number back and after a short wait, a voicemail started telling me it was about my BT line. According to the message, the service couldn’t be reached at the moment but if I wanted their services, I should get in touch with Telco. Seems like a sneaky trick by another company trying to poach BT customers.

Got a call about insurance for white goods, sounded a bit dodgy. Told them I wasn’t comfortable giving out any bank info on a cold call and they started getting quite pushy with me. Happens pretty often actually, I get calls like this every week and the phone numbers look almost the same, just the last number changes.

Beware of that classic con where they try selling dodgy insurance for your ancient washing machine. It’s such a common trick, I wish people would stop falling for it!
