I had a rather dubious phone call recently. An automated voice informed me that HMRC was initiating legal proceedings against me and instructed me to press 1 to connect with a so-called case officer. This has become all too familiar, akin to those relentless messages warning of imminent disconnection of service or claiming that a hefty £600 has mysteriously vanished from my account. Let’s be honest, HMRC wouldn’t reach out with a vague, impersonal message like that. If there was a genuine issue, they would send an official letter addressed to a named person directly.
