Got a call from someone named James saying my area had won a discount card for loads of shops. He also promised a free holiday and flights. I kept him on the line until he said he’d send me a pound, but he just wanted my bank details and some reference numbers. I told him I don’t share that info. He kept insisting it wasn’t a scam, but I told him to jog on. Blocked the number right away.

Sounds like another Indian call centre scam. How does BT even allow these lot to use UK numbers? I’ve reported it to Action Fraud already.

Somebody rang me claiming to be from HMRC but with an American accent? They said we should get a lawyer since we apparently haven't gotten in touch with them or something like that. The first time I reached out to inquire about a number, I was met with a torrent of abuse from an Asian gentleman simply for having the audacity to speak. A couple of months later, I attempted to make contact again, only to be greeted by a voice message instructing me to request someone named Sarah. When I did as asked, an Asian man responded, claiming to be her associate. Upon posing a few questions, I was abruptly told to “shut up” and cut off with a decidedly rude hang-up. Undeterred, I called back only to be informed that I was to keep silent while he rattled off a series of alleged violations I had supposedly committed. When I politely asked him to clarify the numbers, I was met with accusations of rudeness, and he ended the call threatening that the police would be arriving at my home or workplace in mere moments. Since that unsettling exchange, I’ve heard nothing further from him.

I've received more than sixty calls this month, and they all come with a rather threatening voicemail. It usually begins with something along the lines of "This is a time-sensitive matter, Officer Sarah Walker from HMRC," and it’s quite unsettling, to say the least.

I found a rather peculiar voicemail on my partner's mobile. It was apparently from HMRC, but the person had an unmistakably American accent, which seemed quite odd. They were going on about how we need to get a solicitor because we haven't reached out to them, which frankly is absurd! We've never received any correspondence from this agency, and to be honest, we've not done anything wrong at all! Has anyone else encountered a similar situation or received such a message?

Definitely a scam. I got a voicemail and rang back. The bloke didn’t ask any proper security checks or know my last name. He claimed I owed back income tax from 2015 to 2017. He then read out a statement implying I’d done something dodgy with fraud. When I explained I’m a full-time carer for my lad, the line just went dead. Tried calling him again after that, and it slowly dawned on me it was a total con. Really upsetting experience. Hope they get what they deserve.
