Got a garbled message from someone claiming to be HMRC, saying I'm under investigation for tax evasion. They couldn’t give me any of my info and it was pretty obvious it was a scam.

This number rang me up twice, i picked up on the second time and the bloke was really pushy, saying i owed loads to HMRC and police were on their way. I told him i’d just put the kettle on and have some jammy dodgers ready for them and he just hung up. Maybe he was more interested in the biscuits than the money!

Got a call from “Skylark” - sounded like one of those automated things but then a real person answered! When I asked how they got my info, they kinda mumbled their way through it. Then I asked them to say my full name, but they only gave me a first name and it was wrong. I was quite surprised! I told them to remove my number from their list and warned that if they rang me again, I'd report them for harassment to the police. You could tell he didn’t take it well!

I received a message that didn’t specify if it was addressed to Mr or Mrs, which struck me as odd. They made some vague accusations about us being involved in tax evasion, but honestly, we have no idea what they're on about. Then, the next message claimed we were being taken to court over this supposed tax matter. It all sounds rather dodgy to me; I really hope it's just some sort of scam.

The American accent kinda gives it away straight away. I’m self-employed so maybe it was legit, but HMRC always sends letters first, so it’s obviously a dodgy scam. Why don’t the phone firms just block these scammers after the very first complaint??

It must be utterly terrifying for some individuals, particularly the vulnerable and older generation. It gave me quite a jolt, and I'm well aware of these despicable scam phone calls! I swiftly snatched the phone away from my little one who has a penchant for picking up calls. I only answered because it was from an 020 3... number. On the other end was this automated voice, very British, authoritative and quite menacing, declaring something along the lines of, ‘You have been detected for tax evasion and need to ring this number immediately, do not procrastinate’. I really appreciate this website; it was the first place I turned to for information. Absolute rotters!

I missed a call on my landline and found a voicemail waiting that claimed to be from HMRC's tax office, urging me to return the call to resolve an issue with unpaid income tax. Intrigued, I dialled the number using my mobile. A rather forceful woman came on the line, requesting my personal information almost immediately. To my shock, she alleged that I owed a staggering £1950 in back tax! What’s more, she insisted I head over to Sainsbury's to purchase a voucher to settle this supposed debt. When I expressed my disbelief and sought a written confirmation via letter or email, she rudely informed me that they had already dispatched a letter - which I had never received. The conversation took a sinister turn as she threatened that if I didn’t comply, the police would be alerted and I could face arrest! After a lengthy empty spiel about legal implications, she abruptly hung up when I refused to play along. It felt all very questionable!

Got a voicemail from 020 3287 7659, sounded like a middle eastern or indian accent, real rude too, claiming to be from HMRC. AVOID CALLING THIS NUMBER. It’s for sure a scam. I contacted HMRC and they told me they don’t ring people about unpaid bills out of the blue. They recommend reporting these calls at www.actionfraud.police.uk.
HMRC

The 'action fraud' number is 0300 1232040, but honestly it’s a bit pointless - all they do is send you to their website. Then the website just links you to some HMRC info page. Seems like they couldn’t care less. The police won’t do anything unless you’ve actually lost money. I’d recommend calling 999 and reporting it as an attempted fraud (try to get an incident reference) because then they’re forced to log it and it counts towards their crime stats. That’s the only way you’ll get them to take this kind of scam seriously.
