Recently, I found a voicemail on my 93 year old mum's answering machine - she's struggling with dementia and depression, bless her. Luckily, she didn't get to hear it herself. The caller claimed to be from HMRC and said her name was Heather Gray, claiming she was an HMRC Officer. She even left a phone number: 0203 129 1431. The message urged either my mum or her legal representative to ring straight away, saying it was urgent to avoid any further steps being taken against her. I've passed the details on to both HMRC and Action Fraud to investigate.

He spoke with an American accent and said his name was Dave Robertson, telling me to look him up on LinkedIn to prove he was from HMRC. Then he asked for the contact info of my criminal lawyer, claiming I’d been dodging taxes for two years. I didn’t buy it since my records are spotless. I asked why HMRC would call instead of sending a letter. After putting me on hold for a bit, he just hung up. I tried calling back, but after a short convo with another guy also with an American accent, I got cut off again. Definitely a scam.

I got another voicemail today after reaching out to HMRC yesterday and also emailing them about the calls. This morning, they responded saying this number has been reported several times but it’s definitely not them. They gave me a link to report it to the police fraud unit. The best way to warn others is by telling your friends and family, because word of mouth can really spread the news. Someone called my elderly mum claiming to be Heather Gray with a Caribbean accent, saying she was from HMRC and that mum had to ring 0203 1291431 right away, or there would be legal action. Mum didn’t phone back but told me about it. It’s clearly a scam in my opinion. For starters, all official HMRC numbers start with 03000, and my mum has never had any contact or business with them. Got a call from a man with an Indian accent, saying I owed HMRC £5,000 and had to pay right away or else I’d be taken to Court today, my passport seized and my bank account shut down. While on the call, I phoned my accountant who looked up my HMRC online account and confirmed there was no debt. They told me to request proof in writing if there was any amount owed. Really frightening and intimidating stuff.

When I called back, a woman named Sue Brown answered. She asked for my name, but I wouldn’t say anything until she told me who she was and who she was looking for. She then said I didn’t have to stay on the call, but when I repeated my question, she said she’d only confirm after I gave my information. I refused again and she told me to hang up. It felt really dodgy - I’m pretty sure it wasn’t genuine HMRC.
