Got a call from 002080773119 a minute ago. An automated voice said something along the lines of "This is HMRC. Please ring my direct line hot number" (he repeated a number but I couldn’t jot it down quick enough). Then he ended in a creepy way, saying, "Goodbye and TAKE CARE".

Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to a voicemail left on my mother's answering machine. My mother, who is 93 and struggling with dementia and depression, fortunately did not hear the message herself. The caller identified herself as Heather Gray, claiming to be an Officer of HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs). She even provided a telephone number, specifically 0203 129 1431. The message conveyed an urgent nature, insisting that either my mother or her chosen lawyer should call back immediately. Apparently, failure to do so would result in further actions being taken against her. I promptly reported this suspicious incident to both HMRC and Action Fraud.

Beware of this number! It's clearly linked to scammers. They ring you up, claiming you owe a debt that needs settling immediately, or else they threaten to have you arrested within half an hour. They’ll ask for your bank information and other usual dodgy details. Stay vigilant!

I have received information regarding a virtual telephone number that is designed to appear as a London line. This number is rented out to businesses or call centres. If someone dials this number, the call will be redirected to either a landline or a mobile phone, potentially for deceptive purposes.

He spoke with an American accent and said his name was Dave Robertson, telling me to look him up on LinkedIn to prove he was from HMRC. Then he asked for the contact info of my criminal lawyer, claiming I’d been dodging taxes for two years. I didn’t buy it since my records are spotless. I asked why HMRC would call instead of sending a letter. After putting me on hold for a bit, he just hung up. I tried calling back, but after a short convo with another guy also with an American accent, I got cut off again. Definitely a scam.

I received another message today on my answering machine. I had reached out to HMRC yesterday and also sent them an email regarding the message. They responded earlier this morning, stating that they have received multiple reports about this particular number. They clarified that it is in no way associated with them and provided me with a link to report the matter to the police's fraud department. The best way to inform others and raise awareness about this call is by telling our family and friends. Information tends to spread quickly through word of mouth, which can be quite influential. Hopefully, this approach will assist a few individuals. My main concern lies with the elderly, like my mother, who do not have access to the internet to verify if such calls are scams or not.

However, the person on the other end behaved quite rudely and became aggressive when I asked her to verify her identity before answering her question. Someone called my elderly mum claiming to be Heather Gray with a Caribbean accent, saying she was from HMRC and that mum had to ring 0203 1291431 right away, or there would be legal action. Mum didn’t phone back but told me about it. It’s clearly a scam in my opinion. For starters, all official HMRC numbers start with 03000, and my mum has never had any contact or business with them. I received a rather assertive message instructing me to promptly get in touch with Helen Gray at HMRC regarding an outstanding tax debt. The message implied that failing to do so would result in the authorities apprehending me, with the dramatic statement of "the police will be kicking in my door to arrest me before the day is out". If someone claiming to be from HMRC contacts you, it is important to exercise caution. In this case, a woman named Heather Grey left a message instructing you or your lawyer to call back as soon as possible. However, when you called, you were connected with Sue Brown instead. When Sue asked for your name, you refused to provide any information until she disclosed her identity and stated who she was looking for. Instead of clarifying this information, Sue indicated that you did not have to continue the call. Suspecting something was off, you once again asked her to state who she was seeking. She insisted on receiving your details first before confirming. Refusing to share your information again, Sue eventually told you to hang up the phone. Given these circumstances, it is indeed questionable whether the caller was truly from HMRC.

here’s a little trick - whenever you get one of those unwanted cold calls, just say you’re busy watching porn. it really annoys them once they realise you’re not fooled and you’re the one in control. some folks might think it’s a bit cheeky, but as a psychologist, i reckon it gives you the upper hand and puts the time waster in their place. if lots of people had a similar go-to response, maybe these persistent sales calls would die out sooner. cheers, Paul S - Letchworth, Herts

Got calls from an American-sounding bloke, threatening, saying he's from HMRC. Happened on 11/05 & 12/05/2016. Didn’t answer but looked up the numbers using 1471. First was 0161 354 7087 (Manchester), second 0203 129 1431 (London). Really not just annoying, could genuinely scare some people.

Got a robocall saying it was HMRC, telling me to ring back immediately or there’d be trouble. Sounded like a proper scam to me.

Just like someone else said, Heather Gray from HMRC says to ring back or there will be consequences. Best to just ignore it.

Like others have said, got calls from an American robo voice saying they’re Heather Gray from HMRC and not to ignore. They told me to ring back straight away cos something needs sorting. The number keeps ringing loads of times each day for weeks now, so I’m pretty sure nothing’s actually happening and it’s just a scam. Really irritating.

If you find yourself confronted by someone claiming you owe tax, do yourself a favour and enquire precisely what HMRC signifies. It’s quite telling; they often appear baffled.
