Got a call from this number but no one spoke. Apparently, a message was dropped on my answerphone from someone saying they were my case officer. That was all, no other details.

When I got back home, I decided to call the number that had rang me earlier. Someone with a foreign accent picked up and started telling me there was some sort of case with HMRC about me. I asked what they wanted, but before I could say more, they just hung up. I didn’t give them a single piece of info. These scammers need to be cracked down on, seriously. Watch out, folks!

I got a call from this number and the recorded message said it was HMRC ringing me. It told me to press 1 to talk to a case officer, so naturally I did. A guy with a foreign accent answered, and I could hear other people chatting in the background like he was in a call centre. He asked for my name first. I then asked him who exactly he was and what he wanted. He claimed to be from the inland revenue. I told him no way. Then he said if I didn’t believe him I should call the police, and just hung up. Just so everyone knows, the inland revenue is the old name before HMRC was created by merging customs and excise. This is definitely a scam. Best thing is either hang up straight away or keep stalling them with questions, give them fake info to waste their time. Honestly, I wish someone would track down these scammers from overseas who keep doing this rubbish. It’s annoying and worrying for people who don’t know better.

Got a call from this number claiming I had unpaid tax. The woman said her name was Lisa and mentioned she was handling my case. She gave me some ref number, K909743, and an ID: HM 79005. When I asked her to send proof before doing anything, she started getting rude and aggressive. She threatened to freeze my bank account and passport. I hung up straight away. Got a voicemail telling me to press 1, so I did. Within about 20 seconds someone was on the phone, which felt off - HMRC don’t rush like that. I told them straight away if they tried asking for my bank details I’d just hang up. As soon as I said that, the line went dead. Definitely a scam, stay clear!

My mum, who’s 84, got called by these people with the exact same spiel. She was proper anxious about it, had me convinced she thought it was legit. Over the past couple of days, I've had three calls from numbers I didn’t recognise. I never pick up calls from unknown numbers anyway, and thankfully my phone shows who’s calling before I answer. The messages left on my answerphone all follow the same script as others have mentioned - they claim HMRC is suing me and tell me to press 2 to speak to a caseworker. It’s pretty alarming and honestly, these annoying calls need to be put to an end.

In the past day, I got three calls from this number. Two times they left voicemails claiming to be from HMRC, telling me I had legal action against me and to press 1 to talk to the case officer. The third call I actually picked up, and they said it was urgent and I should press 1. I refused and used 1471 to check the number. It’s really upsetting and honestly, this kind of thing should be stopped.

Just got a call like that myself. I'm thinking of reporting it to action fraud but honestly, from what I've seen, it feels pointless. The police usually don't get fraud cases and don't seem bothered by them at all.

got a call from someone saying hmrc has taken legal action against me. total nonsense - hmrc dont ever get in touch like that without warning or trying to sort things out first. ive always been 100% legit with them. this sounds like a phishing scam or maybe even fraud. best to just block it or report it on the police fraud website at www.actionfraud.police.uk, which is easy to use and fast too.

I had a similar experience. From what I’ve heard, if you hit reply it puts you through to a costly international line, which can end up charging you loads on your phone bill. That’s why I reckon this call is pretty risky. Cheers, Mil
