I had been anticipating a call concerning my washing machine policy which had been cancelled, and I was offered a £50 discount. I mentioned I needed some time to think it over, so it wasn't a shock when I received a phone call just as I was about to reach out myself. The caller claimed to be from an appliance insurance company and was explicitly aware of the discount, even stating the price D&G had quoted me. I honestly assumed it was them. They were adamant that the policy could only be sorted out over the phone and that they didn’t record calls. That struck me as rather peculiar, and I started to feel uneasy, especially when they almost shared a bank detail but claimed it hadn’t been processed, which raised more red flags. Out of the blue, I was then speaking to someone claiming to be their manager, but he failed to convince me of his legitimacy. He offered to send a confirmation via email and requested my email address, but again, he stated he wasn't actually from D&G, although he worked with them. My suspicions heightened further, and in the end, he abruptly hung up. I decided to look up the company, which turned out to be unfamiliar, so I called D&G directly. They assured me they would never request personal information over the phone and had nothing to do with these callers. They took my information but informed me I couldn’t renew my policy since I had cancelled the bank order, which clearly indicated I had nearly fallen victim to a scam. At least, having called the usual D&G number, I was certain I was communicating with the right people this time.

I got a call looking for Mrs XXX. Since I’m Dr XXX, I told them they’d got the wrong person. They said “no problem” and seemed ready to end the call, but I mentioned it was the XXX residence. Then they said my first name, which threw me off, so I asked who it was. That’s when they just hung up. It felt like they had some info, so it wasn’t a total nuisance call, but their quick hang-up when I questioned them definitely made me wary.
