This number has rung me thrice already and I haven’t once picked up. It’s quite odd since I don’t have any mates over in London or know anyone from there.

Today I got a call from a number close to mine, something like 020 3026 7946, which looks like it’s part of the same number range. I reckon it’s connected to the same scam. There’s this scammer or maybe a gang using a whole bunch of 020 numbers with a bot to make quick silent calls that hang up as soon as you pick up. If you try to ring them back, you won’t get through because they don’t actually take incoming calls. Basically, what they’re doing is checking which phone numbers are active by ringing loads of random ones to see if anyone answers. If you do answer, you’re basically confirming your number is real and active. That means you’re more likely to be targeted by fraudsters who add your details to a hotlist they trade or use themselves. Usually, soon after one of these silent, automated calls, you’ll get a call from a real person claiming to be from a broadband company, HMRC, Royal Mail or delivery service, asking for card details or payment. My advice? Don’t pick up if it’s an 020 number you weren’t expecting. Google the number first to check if it’s linked to scammers, then block it straight away. Or try calling back with your number hidden - if it just rings out, block it too. These scammers are running some pretty nasty fraud schemes and often target vulnerable or elderly people, stealing millions every year. If you get one of these calls, try to report it to your phone provider - you can usually find out who it’s through by searching online. Also, report to police cybercrime units as they’re tracking these groups. The only way we’ll stop them is if people share info and evidence so they can be caught and jailed.

The individual who rang me asserted they were affiliated with the housing repairs service. However, when I clarified that I'm not a tenant of the council, the caller's frustration became quite apparent.
