A lady who sounds a bit American keeps ringing my mum about some gas insurance offer. Even though my mum has told her no a bunch of times, she just keeps calling back and this one woman’s voice is getting pretty pushy. They claim to be a marketing company but I’m doubtful they actually are.

Absolute scammers! Had a look through some earlier comments and found one that explains how to report these dodgy calls to the police. Just done it myself and it only took a few mins. I recently received a call at my workplace from someone representing the Driveway Centre. When I informed him that he had reached the University of Bradford, he apologised. I responded, “I’m sure you are.” Strangely enough, this isn’t the first time I’ve encountered this chap; months back, he had called me at home from a different number, claiming to be from the Driveway Centre. There’s something quite memorable about his terribly polite manner; he always introduces himself with, “I’m John.” A few months later, he rang my home again, starting his spiel with the same familiar line, yet this time he was offering a medical pendant. I simply sighed in exasperation and hung up. He certainly doesn’t give up easily, and it seems he’s forever changing his phone number to get through.

This number’s been linked to loads of scams lately. The newest one I heard about is the John the Driveway scam. The only way to put an end to these scam calls is by reporting them to the police. Just search for ‘action fraud’ and head to the UK police website. Go to their phishing report page and scroll right down to the bottom to file a report. At the moment, the police don’t really understand how bad this problem is because hardly anyone reports it. And that’s just what scammers want!

I reckon they must be sifting through heaps of phone books to find numbers. Still, how they find numbers that aren’t listed puzzles me.
