What’s tricky is the area code looks so similar to ours - just one number different - so I can see why some folks might get confused and think it’s someone from round here. I got a call from 01783739455 but didn’t pick up. When I tried calling back, after a silent bit, an Indian woman said, “sorry, your call can’t be connected right now.” The 01783 code doesn’t exist anywhere in the UK, so obviously it’s a fake number. It should’ve shown as unrecognised when I dialled it. It’s quite concerning that these bogus numbers can still get through somehow - makes you think how careless the phone companies are being about this. Sometimes I wonder if they’re turning a blind eye because they might be benefiting from these scams?

Got calls from 01783 344511 a few times today. Each time it was an automated voice saying my internet was gonna be disconnected in a matter of hours and to press one to avoid it. I just ignored it, but I can see how some folks might fall for that and get into trouble. Definitely sounds like a scam to me.

Got a message saying I owed some cash and had to ring up to sort it out, with some pretty scary words about what would happen if I didn't. They said they’d already tried to reach me before. I haven’t borrowed a penny from anyone, so this has got to be a scam. It felt quite intimidating and could easily fool someone. I wouldn’t suggest calling them back at all.

This particular STD code has been ringing my landline quite frequently. I’ve taken to ignoring it and letting the call go to voicemail. The caller always hangs up without leaving a message. Upon checking, I've found that there’s no such STD code as 01783 in existence.

What action can BT possibly take in this situation? When someone calls you, and your phone emits that familiar ring, BT has essentially fulfilled its duty. However, if the calls are originating from abroad and employing a myriad of different (or even spoofed) numbers, it surely must be incredibly challenging for them to address the issue effectively.

I've just had a rather dodgy phone call from 01783-###-###. The caller claimed to be from the BT technical department, offering to sort out some issues for me. All I had to do was cough up some cash and provide my bank information, and they’d "make everything right." A quick search revealed that this number hails from Shimla in India. I had a rather peculiar call earlier today at around ### in the morning. An Asian gentleman on the line claimed to be representing BT and mentioned that they had detected some dubious activity on my internet connection during the early hours, specifically between 3 and 6. I mentioned that my son-in-law is quite adept in IT matters, and at that point, they abruptly ended the call. The number they called from was 01783###. When I attempted to ring it back, it wouldn’t go through at all. Quite odd, wouldn’t you say?
