So it was showing up as an international number but the area code was from Peterborough, which I found weird, so I just ignored it. After reading everyone's comments here, I'm really glad I didn't pick up. Honestly, how are they allowed to do stuff like this? It's ridiculous.

Got a call today, it was a recorded message from a woman saying HMRC wanted me to get in touch with my solicitor. I just ended the call straight away because it seemed like a dodgy scam. It's not something that worries me personally, but I do worry about older folks falling for this stuff.

Got a really nasty call from these lot, threatening legal trouble about some tax money I never owed. They gave me a number to call back: 02031296231. Proper dodgy if you ask me.

Some guy claiming to be from HMRC rang me about a supposed court case linked to an accident. I told him I’d actually died in that accident, but he just shouted "YOU LYING BASTARD!" and then slammed the phone down on me. What a numpty!

I seen something about this in the Bolton paper recently. These folks pretend to be from HMRC and try to scare you by saying you’ll face legal action unless you call them on a certain number. They don't even hang up so they're still waiting on the line. Whatever you do, don't call them back - it’s a trick to steal your bank info and cash. Just watch out for this scam!

I usually wait for whoever’s calling to say something first before I say a word when I answer. That way, if it’s one of those robotic calls, it doesn’t get a response and just hangs up. I get loads of those annoying silent calls, so most of the time I just ignore the landline altogether and stick to using my mobile instead. This was just another one of those quiet calls to my landline that ended as soon as it started. Also, I don’t have any caller ID, so I never know who’s ringing until I pick up.

Received a rather alarming message on my answering machine today, purportedly from HMRC, demanding that I return the call without delay as I was supposedly in legal trouble for unpaid taxes. Quite humorous really, seeing as I’m a retired HMRC staff member who doesn’t even owe taxes! Definitely a scam trying to catch the unsuspecting.

Earlier today, at precisely 16:53, I received a rather unsolicited call from this number. Upon inquiring how they managed to obtain my digits, considering I'm registered with the Telephone Preference Service, the caller ominously replied that they would ensure I'd be hearing from him repeatedly. Quite alarming, really!

Like others have said here, the voicemail kicked in a bit late and I didn’t catch the start of the message. It sounded like it was from HMRC, but since the call was obviously automated, not a real person at all, I missed the beginning bit. Pretty clearly one of those pre-recorded messages.
