This number keeps ringing me, but when I pick up no one's there. I tried calling it back using BT's 1471 service today and got a message saying "this number does not exist". So how come BT even allows these calls to come through then? It's a bit confusing.

Usually, there’s just silence for around 10 seconds, but every now and then, like a moment ago, someone with a strange accent says, "I’m ringing from British Telecom about your BT number," then they go quiet and hang up straight away. On the morning of 22/9/18 around 8:30, my mum, who's 93 and struggles with hearing, got a call from this number. The guy on the other end sounded foreign, and she couldn’t really make out what he was saying. When he noticed she wasn’t getting it, he said he’d ring back later and then just hung up.
