My dad, who’s 81, got this exact message from someone pretending to be HMRC about a lawsuit, even though he’s been paying his taxes forever. He was absolutely terrified, especially since he’s just lost his wife of 60 years. He really doesn’t need these horrible people causing him more stress. Honestly, BT should do more to block these scammers from setting up phone lines once they’ve been warned about it.

Upon answering the phone, I received the alarming news that some legal proceedings were allegedly underway against me. They prompted me to press 1 in order to discuss my case with the relevant individual. After retrieving the number via 1471, I attempted to call back only to be informed that my phone lacked sufficient credit to connect the call.

Just got a call from a woman with an Indian accent claiming I owed income tax and threatening legal stuff. I quickly saw it was a scam and told her she should probably stick to farming rice instead. I've reported it to HMRC - they really need to sort these calls out, or folks will only want to communicate with HMRC through letters and cheques if they owe anything.

Got back from spending the day at the hospital where my wife was on a drip for six hours! The very first thing I get is a scam call from this number! Two exhausted old folks in their 80s didn’t need that stress at all. Foolishly, I hit 1, and a recorded voice said the number didn’t have enough credit to pick up!! Hit 1 just for a giggle, ended up speaking to some dodgy bloke who turned out to be a total con artist. Told him I get work is hard to find in India but maybe he should try finding a legit job instead of robbing folks. He then started cussing me out, so pretty sure he wasn’t really from HMRC. Got a call supposedly from HMRC about a lawsuit dated 17.1.18. When I asked for my reference number, they said they hadn't got any letter. Then I asked for my National Insurance number, and they refused. Told them to take their time and find it, but they just said no and hung up on me.

Anyone should be able to tell it’s a scam immediately since they dont even know who’s picking up the phone. Loads of kids have been told they’re in trouble with a lawsuit. From what I’ve heard, if they tell you to press a number to talk to your “case worker,” they’re usually trying to get you to pay some fee to sort out your “case.” These people are absolute con artists, watch out.

A bloke rang my mum who’s just lost her husband. He claimed to be from HM Customs and Revenue and said they were suing her. She was absolutely scared and crying, and when she said she couldn’t handle the call and that he should speak to me instead, he told her to hang up and get ready to be arrested!!! What sort of cruel people do that to someone grieving their partner?!! I really wish there was a way to track down these monsters and stop them.
