I got a call from someone claiming to be from Gold Steam Solicitors about a car finance firm I had dealings with. They said the company had been fined but wouldn’t actually say which one it was. Then they just dropped the call on me. Proper dodgy if you ask me.

My dad, who’s 80, got a call from this number today. They claimed they were from the HMRC and said they were starting legal action against him. They even asked for his NI number and stuff. He’s been really stressed out, thinking he’s done something wrong. It’s awful how these scammers prey on older folks like that.

like with most of these calls they ring from a UK number (01618604906) and say press "1" to speak to your case officer. the bloke who picked up sounded Indian or Pakistani which makes me suspicious they might be running it through a tie line or something. when you push for details they just end the call straight away.

Seems like when someone gets tricked by this scam, they get told to go buy iTunes gift cards from a shop and then give the codes over. The scammers get the money right away, and loads of older folks have fallen for it.

This seems pretty dodgy to me. Got an automated call claiming to be from the Inland Revenue, but the ID showed Taggard Landrover. It’s not the first time I’ve seen that name linked to all sorts of different numbers.

On 14/12/2017 around lunchtime, I got the usual recorded message claiming to be from HMRC, saying they’ve been trying to reach me about some action, and to press 1 to speak to my case officer. I just ended the call straight away. I’m sure HMRC wouldn’t behave like that and would definitely confirm who they were talking to before sharing any case info. Oddly, my phone's software flagged it as an international call, even tho the number showed up as Manchester (0161).

14/12/2017 Got a recorded call from 01618504906 saying HMRC was going to take legal action against me - press 1 to speak to a claims officer. I'm a 74-year-old pensioner with heart problems, had 5 heart attacks already, nearly had another after hearing that message. I quickly worked out it was a scam, but someone less lucky might not be so fortunate - could they be held responsible for manslaughter? These people are just dangerous criminals. They really need to be stopped. But what's the best way to do it?

Clearly they’re rammed today trying this trick. HMRC would never ring you up with an automated message or stuff like that. They’d either send you a letter in the brown envelope or come round themselves. Don’t press any buttons, just hang up straight away.
