Within minutes of putting up my very first Gumtree ad, I already got a call. I don’t usually put my number online, so this wasn’t just chance at all. Looks like scammers are always lurking.

I recently put an item up on Gumtree and, despite all the warnings, I included my phone number. Literally within five minutes, the calls started rolling in, and this was already the eighth call. I answered but stayed silent, and in the background, I could hear what seemed like a hectic call centre. No one spoke, then they just hung up. I've blocked the number now, but it makes no difference - they keep appearing with fresh UK numbers. Telecom companies claim they’re tackling the issue, but it doesn’t seem to make a dent. Honestly, I wouldn’t even bother picking up.

My elderly mum got a call from someone claiming to be from a local church group collecting donations. They somehow convinced her to share her bank details, and she genuinely thought they were genuine. What a rotten scam!
