Some company said they were collaborating with William Morris for HMRC, supposedly helping with tax refunds based on our tax return. I knew right away it was dodgy since we don’t normally file tax returns. I called them out, and they kept insisting they were legit. HMRC doesn't get in touch like that, so it's obviously fake. Plus, they started mentioning my wife's tax stuff, which would breach data protection rules if this was a genuine call.

Got a dodgy call that seemed like one of those call centres from India, but they showed an 0161 number. They wanted my name, but I didn’t tell them. Then a bloke with a heavy accent said it was about a Life Insurance thing. I think they might use different 0161 numbers too.

This sounds like one of those PPI claims companies. I handled the tax part of my PPI claim alone and got the tax refund without any hassle. There's really no need to hand over your personal details to these firms, they just take a cut of what you get back. It's much simpler to just get in touch with HMRC yourself and sort it out. Also, this claims company never seems to leave a voicemail? Strange.

I’ve been getting loads of calls and messages from a company claiming to be the same PPI firm I dealt with before. They say they can help me get back tax that was wrongly charged on my past PPI refunds. Thing is, that company shut down ages ago, so I don’t see how it could be them. Last time I had to sort a PPI claim myself because they went bust. Feels a bit dodgy to me.

CHECKATAX probably got my details from some PPI firm. I didn’t have to provide my info again since they already had it. I was a bit wary at first, didn’t want it to be some kind of scam. About 5 or 6 weeks later I received a letter from HMRC confirming they’d done a check and I was owed some tax back. I actually got the cash just yesterday. So yeah, they might keep calling, but I ended up with my tax refund, something I wouldn’t have bothered doing on my own.

This is definitely a scam, don’t get involved. They kept ringing me non stop until I picked up and asked why, if HMRC owed me cash, they weren’t getting in touch themselves. Plus, why would they be calling from a random Manchester number? They just ended the call on me. Any legitimate money owed from HMRC would come with a proper letter, not a dodgy phone call. They shouldn’t be asking for your details or making you click on suspicious links to share your income info. Don’t fall for it, stay clear.

I honestly dont get why everyone moans so much, these lot helped me get 400 quid back from HMRC after they took tax from my PPI payout. Instead of faffing about, just hear them out, the whole thing was super simple and free cash in my pocket! Stop being so doubtful, folks!
