I got a voicemail from a robotic voice saying it was from HMRC and that the call was urgent. It warned me that if either me or my lawyer didn’t call back on that number, I’d face legal consequences. Since I actually work for the tax department myself, I just ignored it.

Got a call from this number claiming to be from HMRC Manchester asking for £2700 over some tax issue from 15 years ago, like back in 2005. I managed to stop the scam cos I asked too many questions. I’m in a similar boat. Gave the number a ring back and was met with an automated American voice - strange, as it referenced a completely different name from the one on the message. Genuine HMRC correspondence should always come through the post, in my opinion. Interestingly, I also received a text about an account being shut down, but it didn’t specify which one. Naturally, I was curious and clicked the link, only to find it led to a dodgy PayPal phishing site. It’s pretty evident that my number has been passed around somewhere.
