So I've gone ahead and blocked it now.3 yearsI’ve spent over five decades in the telly industry since I was just a teenager, and something that always gets on my nerves is when someone calls and their very first words are, “Can I speak to [name]?” or “Is this [name]?” I reckon a caller should always kick off by saying who they are, what company they’re with, and why they’re ringing before asking to speak to anyone. Whenever they jump straight in asking for me by name, my spidey senses tingle. It’s a classic trick from scammers and salespeople who want to make it seem like they've had some sort of previous contact or are targeting you personally. When this happens, I usually tell them, “If you’re phoning someone, you should introduce yourself first, say what company you represent, and explain your reason for calling. Only then might I let you speak to the person you want. Right now, I’m already wary you might be a scammer.” Most of the time, these dodgy callers just hang up on me. But if it’s a genuine call - like from your bank, a doctor’s surgery, hospital, or phone provider - they’ll explain who they are and why they’re ringing. Just the other day, a telemarketer or scammer did exactly that - hung up as soon as I said this - proving my point.3 yearsWhen someone rang me saying they were from Sky, I just ended the call straight away ’cause I didn’t want to risk getting scammed.Sky3 yearsTo avoid falling for a scam, I just ended the call straight away when they said they were from Sky.Sky4 yearsWhat on earth is going on?Blimey4 yearsSomeone just gave me a ring, anyone know what that was about?Submit Your Own Report (0161 243 1347)
