Naturally, I pressed 1 to engage. A chap named Michael came on the line, and in a bid to confuse him, I provided a fictitious name and date of birth, claiming to bank with HSBC. To my surprise, he agreed with me! He then proceeded to inquire about the balances in both my current and savings accounts, and I happily threw out a rather hefty sum. He mentioned that this wasn’t the first time my account had been targeted and that the Anti-Fraud team at HSBC were already on the case. He then gave me a number to contact them, which I suspect was just another scammer sitting next to him. He called me back, asking whether I had reached out to them.
