Cold calls would probably die out if folks just stopped giving them any attention. But since some people do pick up and chat, these companies keep on trying. Personally, I ignore all of them and if a business keeps ringing or sending junk mail, I make a point never to deal with them - I've done that plenty of times before.

I got a couple of calls on my mobile today from what sounded like an auto-dialer with weird gaps, like they wanted you to believe it was a real person. Vodafone already flagged the number as spam, so no surprise there.

Watch out for those HMRC scams! My sister nearly got caught up in it. She was about to spend over £1000 on cash vouchers because she believed it was the tax office calling. When I asked her, she quietly said, “It’s HMRC, they said I owe taxes and I have to pay with these vouchers.” Seriously, this scam is everywhere now, so be careful with calls like that!
