The phone rang and when I picked up, a man said “Hello, this is the UK Advice Centre, how are you today?” I tried to ask what they were calling about but they ended the call straight away. Seems like they didn’t want someone asking questions!

I started labelling my spam calls as spam A, spam B, spam C and so on. Now I don’t even have to think twice before ignoring them - no more wondering if I should pick up or not. It’s been a real help!

First, ask them whether the call is being recorded. If they say yes, tell them you might need a transcript later on, and that by law they have to provide it if you ask. Next, firmly say that you want your phone number deleted from their records, as this is something they're legally obliged to do upon request. Make sure you write down their name, address, and a contact person, maybe someone in customer service. Get them to confirm they understand what you've asked for. Also, warn them that if they call you again from any number, they’ll be breaking the Data Protection Act 1998, and that you'll insist on the call transcripts and consider legal action under the Protection from Harassment legislation.
