I got a missed call from this number, so before ringing back, I looked it up here first. They claimed to be from HMRC, but I asked them a few times to be sure. The person on the line got quite annoyed and insisted they were from the HMRC refund team. I said, “Oh, so you’re giving refunds to people, yeah?” They said yes, and I told them to just keep my money, I didn’t want it. Then they hung up on me :)

Apparently this guy claimed to be from HRMC saying I had £683.80 coming back to me for overpaying taxes over the past five years. He explained since of the Pandemic, refunds were being paid straight into bank accounts instead of cheques by post 'cos they understood people were struggling and wanted to speed things up. He then asked for my bank info but I told him to just send it through the post since they already have my details. At that point, the phone got slammed down on me followed by a rude expletive.

Straight away I knew it was bogus - anyone with a bit of sense knows HMRC don’t ring you out of the blue, they always send a letter first asking you to get in touch. Plus, I’m not behind on any tax, so there’s no way they’d be after me. I never bother listening to any automated messages or go along with the call.
