That was British Gas, the nice lady who phoned me sorted out switching from cash or cheque payments to direct debit, so yeah, THIS IS BRITISH GAS! They actually use that call centre.

I received a call from someone claiming to be from British Gas, stating they needed to verify my direct debit details. The chap on the line seemed rather convincing-an older gentleman with a lovely speaking voice-but I always make it a rule to verify any unfamiliar numbers. Quite alarming, really!

They gave me the first half of my postcode, and I replied, "That info’s easy to find." They said, "If I can’t verify data protection, I can’t talk about it." 01482293904 rang me claiming to be from British Gas, telling me my new direct debit would go up by £67 a month. They said my account was £220 overdrawn, but I checked the app and it actually showed a £117 credit. I played along for a bit and then he asked for payment over the phone. The line kept cutting out with loads of interference even though it’s a landline here in Hull. I asked for something in writing to confirm, but he seemed unsure if he could send anything. I just hung up. Definitely a SCAM.
