Got a call round 5.20pm on Thursday 18/08/2022 from a woman using this number claiming to be with British Gas. She was quite pushy, insisting that I set up a direct debit straight away for my energy bill. There was loads of shouting and noise in the background, sounded like loads of people. Made me think maybe she was calling from a busy pub or something.

This number is definitely NOT from British Gas. It’s a total scam. I actually phoned British Gas about something else and asked them about this number while I was on the line. They checked it out and told me straight away it wasn’t theirs and that it’s a scam. They advised me to block it asap.

This is BG again. If they ask for anything, just double check your account details online. No matter who your provider is, you'll usually get a discount if you pay by direct debit. But never set up a direct debit with someone ringing you out of the blue. Loads of scammers fake real company numbers these days.

Seems like this is happening to others too. Got moved over to BG a couple of months back after my old provider went bust, wasn’t something I picked myself. Didn’t pick up when this number rang. If this is about setting up a direct debit, that’s totally unasked for and I don’t want it. I always pay my bills when they arrive like I did before. If I wanted to switch, I’d do it on my own.

My missus picked up the phone and the person on the line had a Northern English accent, saying they were from British Gas and asked for me by name. I wasnt around then so she told them to ring back later. They did call back about quarter of an hour after but hung up before I got to the phone. I tried calling the number but just got some recorded music so gave up. I was recently, unfortunately, switched to BG by OFGEM after my old supplier went bust. They knew my previous energy supplier’s name, which made me think it was genuine. They asked if I wanted to switch to a fixed tariff. This number seems to be genuine - I actually shared my info with them to arrange a British Gas direct debit since I used to be with Peoples, which closed down in Sept '21.
