Somebody called pretending to be from HM Revenue, saying I had unpaid taxes and they were gonna take me to court. It was a complete scam, don't fall for it!

As soon as I answered, an automated voice kicked in, saying it was from hrme. They warned that if neither me nor my lawyer got back to them straight away, there’d be serious consequences. Proper stressful call!

On Thursday 24 January 2019 at 10:01 am, I got a voicemail from a woman speaking with an American accent. The message said something like, "You need to ring us urgently regarding a serious matter. I’m Officer Claire Williams from HM Revenue and Customs. The number to reach my team is 01442 780173, that’s 01442 780173. Please don’t ignore this message, call us straight back. If we or your solicitor don’t hear from you soon, legal action could follow. Goodbye and be careful." The call came from 01442781129.

I got a voicemail from someone named Peyer Williams, sounded like they had an accent from abroad. When I rang them back, they didn’t ask any security questions or anything, just blurted out that HMRC were taking me to court for tax evasion and fraud. I got a bit annoyed and ended the call. Since then, every time I try calling that number back it’s just busy. Pretty sure this is a scam. The number was 01442 781129.
