Just like the previous commenter noted, I received a call at precisely 8 o'clock this evening from these people who were searching for someone that doesn’t reside at my address. They claimed to be from American Express.

Yet another one of those silent calls from this number. I've noticed I received about 15 of them, all around 30 minutes past three on the 6th of August, 2008. Quite mysterious, isn't it?

I received a couple of calls recently from a number linked to "American Express." Quite the coincidence, as it's the second time in a fortnight! The chap on the line, who had a pleasant Pakistani accent, asked for me by name and inquired when I might be interested in discussing their latest services. We kindly turned down his offer, and suddenly, his demeanor shifted dramatically. It felt as though he thought we were just wasting his time-classic case of psychological projection, if you ask me! I decided it best to cut the conversation short then.

It’s actually illegal to leave a voicemail message, so these folks are merely fulfilling their duties.

This evening at 8 o'clock, I received a call from these folks claiming to be American Express, searching for someone who clearly isn't a resident here. It's quite baffling, as we seem to get similar calls nearly every day, though the number is rarely the same.

Earlier today at precisely 1:14 PM, we received a rather dubious call from a woman sporting a Scottish accent. We quickly let her know we'd heard about this scam and promptly hung up. Funny enough, this marked the second time I've had a call from this particular number.

I’ve been receiving a couple of silent calls lately, and then I finally got one from an actual person at the end of the line. I've got an Amex card that gives decent cashback, yet these callers are relentlessly trying to convince me to engage further. I don’t think my partner has ever clearly said, “please take me off your call list,” which seems far more effective than simply expressing, “I’m not interested now or in the future.” It’s almost as if they’re waiting for a secret password, and I can assure you, the word isn’t “mate.”

It seems that whenever you suggest shutting down accounts, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. However, when we took the plunge and closed mine, that certainly got their attention. I had another chat with head office, where I was asked about our decision to cancel the cards, and I made my reasons quite clear. The response? An incredulous, "Oh," as if they were hoping we would reconsider. I’m far too polite to spell out our sentiments in a text. Businesses that mishandle personal data only understand one thing-hit them where it hurts financially! And thankfully, no more phone calls have come my way since!

In the last week, I've received no fewer than three of these nuisance calls. Every time the phone rings and we answer, we hear a strange noise on the other end, which makes it clear it's some sort of automated system. Consequently, we just hang up. I'm considering contacting Amex to let them know I’m ready to cancel my card-something I was already thinking about-unless they can come up with a truly compelling offer to retain my custom. Oh, and I'll definitely remind them I'm registered with the TPS.

I've been receiving multiple blank calls from this number throughout the day, usually at least a couple while I'm busy at work. It's become quite a hassle, as each week I return to find the voicemail light flashing with '2' messages, only to discover that the caller hasn't actually left any proper message. Quite annoying, to say the least!

Received an unsolicited call just after 6 PM. The caller didn’t leave any message or details.

It appears that the Phone Preference Service isn't entirely effective across every single organisation.

They ring us without fail on a daily basis.

This number seems to ring me daily, even on weekends! I always screen my calls with the answering machine, and as expected, this one never bothers to leave a message. There's another caller that usually asks about accidents, and they fill up the machine nearly to bursting. It’s quite clear they’ve realised that folks are screening their calls. To us, if someone genuinely wishes to speak with you, they'd take the time to leave a message, wouldn’t they? We might have to consider opting for a setup that allows only personal callers. Has anyone tried that? Does it really do the trick?

I answered a call just after 8 pm, and all I got was a silent line. We've got an American Express card, so it could have been them trying to reach out. Since there was no conversation, we can't be certain!

Not a chance!!!! Way too many loopholes.

To Graham W: It appears that once you enter into a commercial relationship with a company, the Telephone Preference Service doesn't seem to cover those interactions. Consequently, they might feel they’re within their rights to call you about their other offerings. If you’ve reached out to them asking to cease calls, as you mentioned, they ought to honour that wish without question.

Received a silent call from this number at 8 o'clock this evening. This isn’t the first time I've experienced this either - it’s really infuriating when they just hang up as soon as we pick up! So frustrating!

I was contacted by American Express, seemingly trying to sell us some sort of accident and travel insurance. After a bit of back and forth, they finally mentioned it would set us back nearly £18 a month. At that point, we politely declined the offer.

I'm absolutely fed up with these annoying calls that come in daily, usually around 6:30 in the evening. It's always the same story - by the time I reach for the phone, they’ve already hung up. I received one message that claimed it was urgent for me to speak with them, but the line quality was appalling, and I couldn't make out a thing. It’s definitely a case of a predictive dialler, as they seem to disconnect the line at lightning speed! The majority of these interruptions are just texts announcing missed calls, even though my phone hasn’t made a sound. To top it off, my number is registered with the TPS as well - ridiculous, isn’t it?

We've discovered quite an amusing tactic for dealing with these annoying calls (it certainly keeps our spirits high). When someone rings you up, simply ask them to hang tight while you go and fetch the person they’re after. In the meantime, pop your phone down next to a speaker so they can enjoy some tunes for as long as you’d like. More often than not, they hang up well before you make your grand return!

This number gave us a call at precisely 6 PM today, but they hung up the moment I answered. I suspect it could be American Express, as they've tried to get in touch with us a few times over the past week. Quite odd behaviour, really!

I've had a similar experience to what others are describing. I've been screening my calls, and this number has reached out to me three times now without so much as a message left behind. That's what prompted me to look it up on Google. It's utterly shocking to find out this is linked to American Express, a company that usually has a stellar reputation.
