I received a rather dodgy call on my home phone from a lady with a thick accent who claimed to be calling from Microsoft. She insisted that they had been noticing multiple alerts linked to my computer’s licence over the last couple of months. I pressed her to send me more information so I could sort it out myself, but she went on about how I hadn’t been addressing the alerts and wanted me to switch my computer on. I fibbed and told her it was already powered up, when in reality, it was as dead as a dodo. She then began asking me what was displayed on my screen and which key was beside the Ctrl key on my keyboard! I quickly realised she was trying to pull a fast one and would likely want access to my machine for nefarious purposes. I told her outright that it sounded like a scam, but she kept insisting my computer was in jeopardy. At that point, I simply hung up, and thankfully, she didn’t ring me back.

I had an interesting experience with a chap sporting an Asian accent who rang my home phone, claiming he was from Microsoft, apparently my internet service provider, and informed me I’d been compromised. I quickly pointed out that Microsoft isn’t my provider at all. Curious about his origins, I asked him where he was calling from, and he provided a London address. When I inquired about the weather there, he seemed puzzled and asked why I was curious. I casually mentioned that it was simply because I suspected he might be a fraudster. He proceeded to share a “certificate number” for my computer and insisted I log on while he stayed on the line. Naturally, I didn’t log in, and after a bit of waiting, he eventually hung up. Moments later, he rang back, warning me he was about to shut down my account and block my computer, but wished me a pleasant day nonetheless. I found great amusement in the fact that I’d managed to waste his time. Oh, what fun!

Absolutely, I found myself picking up my mum's phone - she's 96, bless her - and on the other end was someone clamouring for access to her computer. They were incredibly pushy, despite my clear explanation that she doesn’t own a computer. They even went so far as to insist that I turn one on just to have a chat! What a cheeky little villain! In the end, I gave him a piece of my mind and told him to take a hike!
