Just got a call from one of our patients who said she was contacted around 8pm yesterday evening by someone who said they were from Audiology, trying to arrange an appointment. She mentioned it seemed like it was from a call centre because there was loads of background noise, so she ended the call and used 1471 to check the number. The number she got was 01332 895906. When I looked it up online, I found plenty of forums warning that it’s a scam. Thought I’d share here in case more patients report the same, but I’m not sure what the best next steps are with this info.

Even though I’m signed up with the TPS, this firm keeps ringing me nonstop. They keep saying I’m 'listed' as having worked somewhere that damaged my ears - which is totally untrue. Every time I tell them I’m on the TPS list and ask them to take me off their records, but the calls just don’t stop. It’s really annoying.

I got two calls today asking if I’ve got trouble hearing. Told them if they call again, I’d report them straight away. They hung up right after. Got a call today on 07.04.15 at around 6:50pm. We always check the caller ID, so we just ignored it. Both me and my missus can hear perfectly fine, so it's a mystery how they managed to get our number. I was under the impression the government was cracking down on these kinds of calls. Luckily, I got myself a BT 8500 phone recently that promises to block out dodgy calls. It's actually doing the trick! The phone doesn’t ring unless the caller says who they are, which scammers never seem to do, or if the number’s in your allowed contacts. So it’s saved me a fair bit of hassle so far.

A polite young bloke called me claiming he was ringing from the hearing centre, asking if any of us had worked in factories or heavy industry before. It was all about some compensation claim. I usually avoid these surprise calls but just told him 'no' straight away, and he said “right, thanks, bye” in a nice manner before ending the call.

In my experience, these firms (especially those law firms fishing for hearing loss claims) get hold of our numbers from pushy call centres overseas. They say it’s all for “market research” and that they “aren’t selling anything,” but they have definitely called us before. These foreign “market research” companies, which aren’t covered by the TPS, ask loads of questions about charities, your shopping habits, past jobs and so forth. Even if you refuse to answer, they’ll just make up stuff anyway. Your details then get passed on to a whole bunch of other businesses who see you as a potential customer. Once they have “bought” your info as a genuine lead, they often don’t even realise (or just don’t care) that you’re listed on the TPS. Hopefully, one day rules or tech will stop this nonsense, but until then, we’re stuck relying on our own phone blockers to filter out these annoying calls.

Got a call around half past four this afternoon. The person said they were from "The Hearing Organisation" and insisted they were some sort of "Government-backed agency". They asked if I’d ever had a job where there was a lot of noise. I told them straight away I don’t share any personal details with strangers, and reminded them I’m on the TPS list to avoid these unwanted sales calls - which made their call out of order and against the law.

Being hard of hearing, I rely on a screenphone that shows the caller ID and lets me save numbers to my phone book/relay system. I saved this number as "Scam" and decided to ring it back. It’s funny how many times (3 just today!) they’ve called me. They usually let it ring about 8 times before hanging up.
