3 yearsI received a rather questionable call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, who insisted that my computer had been bombarding them with error reports and ominous alerts. Naturally, I was quite sceptical and inquired how it was possible for them to monitor every Microsoft machine on the planet. This apparently irked her, and she exclaimed, “Each computer possesses a distinct licence ID number, are you not aware of that?” She then proceeded to urge me to power on my computer, implying that the next move involved downloading some sort of remote access software. I cleverly stated that my computer was in a different room and my mobile wouldn’t extend that far, which prompted her to abruptly terminate the call.
