Got a call from someone claiming to be from 'BT Openreach' about my slow internet. I mentioned I’m just a stone’s throw away from an Openreach building here in Devon (which is true), and then he said he was calling from their main office in Bangalore. How come these dodgy call centres abroad can use UK phone numbers or ones that seem like local landlines? He was trying to get me to give him control of my laptop.

I received a dodgy call purporting to be from 'BT Openreach', claiming they needed to access my laptop. Strangely enough, I reside adjacent to their local office, but when I pressed him for details, he insisted he was calling from their headquarters in Bangalore. It raises the question: why the UK number? How can these international fraudsters legally mask themselves behind British phone lines? I've now blocked it, but given how much time I wasted chatting with him, I'm bracing myself for a slew of nuisance calls to come.
