A few years ago, I fell victim to a scam by better media solutions who promised advertising space in a police magazine. Now, I am constantly receiving phone calls from them. The only time I answered, the person claimed that I had placed an advertisement in another magazine and that they were seeking payment. I received a rather peculiar phone call from a number starting with 01215 555556. Curiosity got the better of me, so I dialled 1471 to track it down. The chap on the line introduced himself as Peter, but something about the whole exchange didn’t sit right with me. I challenged him to justify his identity and he provided another number, 020 3807 3796. Naturally, I decided to look it up while we were still on the line. To my surprise, I stumbled upon a thread where someone identified that number as being affiliated with Scottish Power. When I confronted him about this, he quickly changed his story, claiming to be from British Gas instead. So, I pressed him further, asking whose name was on the account. He confidently declared it to be Daniel Austin. Now, while I am indeed named Daniel, the surname he mentioned certainly isn’t mine! Not to mention, I don’t even have an account with them. When I pressed him for more details, he wasn’t able to provide any names. Definitely fishy if you ask me!
