I've had two calls from someone claiming to be John at the energy advice centre out in south west London. The number was slightly different the second time, swapping the last digit from a 4 to a 7. I told them I was on the telephone preference service and then suddenly they just went silent. Definitely sounds like a scam.

I keep getting calls from what sounds like a robot pretending to be a real person. They always say their name is something like Chris, Cliff, Patrick, or Alex, and claim they're from my local energy company - which is weird because I don’t think there’s even such a position. Their goal seems to be to convince you to agree to a loft insulation check so they can sell you some sort of spray foam insulation. They scare you by suggesting your loft might have mould if you’ve got the usual insulation. The calls come from different numbers but always beginning with 012021432xx. If you want to stop it right away, just hang up, or when they ask “Are you the homeowner?” just say “no” and they’ll end the call. If you feel like wasting some time, you can ask them to repeat themselves to make them go in circles.

I never pick up calls from numbers I don’t recognise. There was no voicemail left, so it’s pretty clear it’s some sort of automated call. That number has always been unlisted or private for me. I looked it up through your site. Honestly, these kinds of calls are just ridiculous.

Got a call from a bloke who said his name was Chris, but this was actually the second time he'd phoned me, couple of weeks apart. First time he rang, I told him there was no way I was climbing into my loft and insisted my insulation was fine. When he called again, he claimed he could somehow tell it needed a check, which is a bit rubbish if you ask me. So today when the same number popped up, I just ignored it and didn't bother to answer. Just got a phone call from someone claiming to be Alex from my supposed 'Local Energy Company'! I was immediately suspicious because I had never heard of him before. Then he asked if I was the owner of the property, which set off alarm bells since the house is registered solely in my brother's name and I'm just visiting. I asked who exactly he wanted to speak to, and there was complete silence for a few moments. I pressed him further, “Are you going to answer me or just stay quiet? What’s the name of the person you're looking for?” But Alex didn’t say a word and abruptly hung up on me! Like others have said here, they go quiet and drop the call - classic scammer behaviour 😤, probably trying to trick people into handing over personal info and money. Also, funny how this Bournemouth number supposedly was local to North West Kent - doesn’t add up! I’m definitely reporting this to the fraud squad and the police.

Maybe if someone pretends to go along with the scam and waits for the scammer to turn up at their place, they could then ring the cops and jot down the car number plate? Seems like a smart move if you ask me!
