This needs sorting out soon, as I’m really concerned about older folks who might get tricked or confused by these.

Never had a call like this before. At first I thought it was some kind of premium rate scam until I looked it up here and found out it’s actually a trick. Honestly BT, you’d think with all the tech you have, you could at least tell us which country these calls are coming from or maybe you just make too much money from them to care?

Got three calls right after each other from 0118 904 9938. They said some number was trying to get hold of me and I should press any key to call back. I just ignored it and hung up. Every time it was the same recorded message. After the last one, I didn’t even pick up and no more calls since then.

Got a call from a really polite woman who said “there’s a call waiting for you, press any button to connect.” Didn’t come across that one before, but I knew it was likely a trick to get you through to some expensive service. I just ended the call and checked this site to see if others had reported it.

Update: Me and a mate both rang this number, he used his mobile, I called from my landline. He got through to HMRC but I just got a message saying #number not recognised#. Definitely looks like a scam to me.

I just received a rather peculiar phone call from this number, featuring a pre-recorded voice claiming to be from Wessex Water. The message stated there was a water main burst in my vicinity, expected to be resolved by 5:45 PM. They then prompted me to press 1 for further details or 2 if I wanted to hear the same message again. Given that I doubted Wessex Water would use a 0118 number, and that a burst pipe hardly seemed urgent enough to warrant a call, I decided to hang up. I’m relieved I did, as a quick search revealed it’s a complete scam! Let’s hope others don’t fall for this ludicrous recorded spiel!

This number has rung me a few times already. After looking it up on sites like this, I figured out it’s a scam. It’s part of a bunch of similar scam calls from different numbers all pretending to be from BT or HMRC and that lot. My phone won’t let me block them but I saved them all under "scammers" so when they call I either don’t pick up or I just hang up quick to stop the ringing. I’ve flagged them as “Dangerous” cos I reckon their messages are made to frighten loads of vulnerable people.

I checked out the Wessex Water site and their contact numbers are different. Also, there’s no mention of any water issues where I live. The call actually came from a Reading area code, which is quite a bit east of where Wessex Water operates.
