Yesterday, I had a missed call at exactly 16:18. No voicemail was left behind. The number was unfamiliar to me, so I just ignored it. However, the area code and the way the call came through seemed quite familiar, making me suspect it was probably some kind of scam.

Got a call on my landline from someone who said his name was Matthew. He claimed he was following up about loft insulation. We're registered with TPS and never asked for any of this. I told him he was a scammer and to stop calling. Then he just hung up. Proper dodgy, could catch someone out.

I asked, "Which property are you referring to?" and after that... nothing. Just dead silence. I asked again, still no response. Then they just ended the call. Got a call from someone saying his name was Tom, he spoke about some loft insulation we had done and said it was causing damp. He wanted to come round and check it out. When I asked him to spell my surname to confirm he was legit, he refused to give me mine, saying that since he called me, he should already know it. To confuse me more, he then said his real name was Matthew. Total odd one.

Got a call from some bloke banging on about how my loft insulation might be causing damp and that it needs checking out. I cut him off and asked if he was aware of the TPS. He said no, so I told him to have a proper look at it before phoning people at random. Told him to have a good day and ended the call. Reported it to the TPS - feels pointless but worth a shot - and also to the ICO, which occasionally does something. It's really frustrating that these scams keep happening, targeting vulnerable older folks.

Initially, I figured this would be one of those robocalls, but then a bloke spoke up on the other end. He said he was from a government insulation programme. Before he could go on, I told him my insulation was fine, no problems, and I wasn’t interested in any checks. Then I just ended the call. These calls are driving me mad, I get a couple or three every week now. I've tried blocking the numbers, but they keep ringing from new ones.

I picked up the phone without thinking, said hi and was about to hang up after a moment when I caught someone talking. Decided to look up the number since it might be important. After seeing other comments, it looks like it’s likely a scam or some annoying sales call. These cold callers always seem to ring around teatime, which is so frustrating. Not sure who it was but I usually don’t bother answering calls from unknown area codes anyway.

Got called by the same one twice now, with the exact same spiel. First time was a few days ago. Today I picked up, answered the first question, then he asked if my loft was still just a storage area (it’s not). After that he just went quiet, said "Hello??", so I asked if I was even speaking to a real person. And then he just cut me off. Wish it was as simple to block these calls on a landline as it is on a mobile. Proper annoying!
