Got a dodgy email pretending to be from Barclays, tricking you into calling them. Total bank scam if you ask me.

Got a call from some scammers claiming Barclays had arranged a direct debit to a dental clinic in Shrewsbury. They told me to call a Nottingham number if I wanted to sort it out. The message said something like: "Your payment plan has been set up. We confirm the following: Merchant is Radbrook Dental Practice, amount £398.57, first payment due on 24th December 2025, reference BA-7DR8GK. If you approved this, you don't need to do anything." Obviously, I had no idea about this and it sounded dodgy as hell.

Just a quick reminder, a few comments back there's a simple guide on how to report scam emails. It’s really easy to do, but it seems like hardly anyone’s bothered. If all the recipients of these dodgy emails actually forwarded them to '[email protected]'.

Hey, just got an email saying I've got a direct debit set up for a dental clinic in Manchester charging over £350 a month - problem is, I'm miles away, like over 200 miles! These scammers are the worst, seriously parasites. They should be locked up and made a public example of. Total rubbish. That email was a total fake. Keep pushing back so honest folks don’t get caught out.

This seems like it’s coming from Halifax. The email says a Direct Debit has been arranged for a hefty monthly payment to a dental practice in Manchester - which actually is a real place. There’s even a phone number included to ring if you believe there's been an error. Everything about it looks quite legit, right down to the bank address and the company registration info.

A few posts down, about four or so, there’s info on how to report scam emails. And if your bank suddenly gets in touch out of the blue, best thing to do is ring them directly using the number on your card or your statements to double check.
6 months
Make sure you report these emails! There's a post around six or seven comments down that explains exactly how to do it. Scammers thrive because most people don’t take the time to report them. That’s how they keep pulling it off, and unfortunately, it’s the vulnerable people who end up getting scammed. One or two reports won’t cut it - we need heaps of reports flooding in so something actually gets done.

I got a call from someone claiming to be Halifax saying a direct debit was arranged on my account, which I never set up. They asked me to ring this number 0115 706 0036. They didn’t give me any info about my account or even my name. Halifax wouldn’t contact you without clear references or details. This is definitely a scam, watch out!

Got a call from 0115 706 0036, apparently about a dental surgery in Manchester. Looked dodgy, so I sent the email they gave me over to Halifax Bank and also reported it on phishing.gov.uk. Seems like a scam to me!

Just like a few others mentioned, I got a message from a dental surgery saying a direct debit had been arranged and to ring 0115 706 0036 if I didn’t know anything about it. Since I don’t have an account with Halifax, alarms were going off straight away. Still, I always look at the email they’ve sent from because that can usually give the game away. In this case, they used an email address I don’t even use anymore or that’s been part of some data breach before. So, yeah, pretty suspicious from the get-go.

I got an email that said it was from the Halifax Security Team about a new direct debit set up for £368.50 each month to Parkfield Dental Practice in Manchester. It told me to ring 0115 706 0036 right away if I didn’t know about this payment. There’s no way I’m going all the way from East Kent to Manchester just for a dentist appointment!

Everyone seems to be aware of this scam by now, it’s been mentioned loads down in the comments. But what’s the best way to handle it? That’s been shared too, so just to go over it again. You should forward any scam emails to '[email protected]' online. Plus, if you want to report scam calls or messages, just look up '7726' and you’ll find how to do it properly.

These scammers have a real knack for targeting us Brits, probably because most folks don’t bother reporting their dodgy calls. I spotted a post earlier today on this thread, and if you scroll down about 15 messages, there’s a handy guide on how to report scam emails. Seriously, if we all reported scams, it might help put an end to them!

Like some others here, I contacted Halifax about a direct debit linked to a dental practice in Manchester. If you get scam emails, make sure to forward them to '[email protected]'. The reply from the NCSC can be quite fascinating to read. Don't forget, dialling '7726' is the way to report scam texts and calls, so google that if you're unsure.
