This number sent me a weird message at midnight that just said "run". I blocked it straight away. Then, about 10 minutes after, a different number (+447520607717) messaged me saying "i would listen to the other texts". It’s strange cause from what I’ve seen, no one else seems to have got messages from this second number, and I can’t find any details on it either. Bit creepy if you ask me.

Someone got in touch with us via Gumtree wanting to buy our piano. The guy said he was the son and asked if we could email his dad about the sale. We sent a message to '[email protected][###]' and the reply we got back was really odd. After searching the email online, we were relieved we did. The replies others shared sounded exactly like ours. Right after putting up the ad, his message came super fast. Said he’d only pay through PayPal, couldn’t take calls because of a 'strict job', and that a courier would pick up the piano for his son. Very sketchy. DO NOT TRUST- DEFINITELY A SCAM.

Had a similar situation selling a dog, the bloke said he worked in the mines for AES. He asked for my email and bank details, said a courier would come to collect the dog, do all the paperwork and deliver it. He wanted to pay me through PayPal straight to my account and kept asking for bank info. He called himself Clint Bugter and even sent a photo of a heavy machinery licence with a Victoria address. Hope he ends up with some proper injuries for trying to scam folks like that.

I stupidly gave this person my BSB, bank details and even my home address. Just like in the other comments here. Got an email from some bloke named Clint Bugman claiming to be from VIC, Australia saying he wants to buy my car straight away. He said he’s in NZ at the moment working for an oil firm so he can’t call or check out the car himself. Instead, he said he’d send a courier to handle the paperwork after he’s paid me. No idea how they manage with just a bsb and account number but it’s definitely a big scam. It really upsets me thinking about them preying on honest people. Proper nasty stuff. Stay clear!

Got an email like 15 minutes after I posted an ad on Gumtree, saying they wanted to buy my sofa. The message was nearly identical to others I’ve seen - claiming to be in a wheelchair, deaf, only dealing through PayPal, and buying for a cousin. They told me to cancel the ad and not sell to anyone else. I was suspicious right away, so I checked this number here and found these discussions. Lucky I did, but it’s really upsetting how people like this keep scamming. Proper nasty scammers.

I encountered an individual attempting to scam me while I had posted a guitar ad on Gumtree. It was quite audacious of them to presume that I would fall for their scheme and send money, especially since they claimed to be disabled and unable to visit Western Union. I received an inquiry from a person named John Williams who wanted to purchase my car. He claimed that he would transfer the payment through PayPal and send a message pretending to be from PayPal. However, he insisted that I had to send £350 to a Western Union account, even providing an address for me to send it. An individual attempted to deceive me in connection with a recent item purchase by requesting payment (£470) for shipping. They even went as far as sending emails pretending to be from PayPal. However, upon contacting PayPal, it was confirmed that the emails were fraudulent. I have proceeded to report this incident to the PayPal fraud department. These unscrupulous individuals are truly despicable.

Same here. Posted my car on gumtree and within an hour got a message asking if the price was firm and to get in touch via email. Then the next text was like ‘consider it sold, I’ll pay full price, send more pics, can’t see it in person cause deaf and wheelchair user’ - felt really dodgy to me! I’m gonna report this to gumtree and the cops.

I put an ad up on Gumtree and, like usual, scammers come out of the woodwork. Got a text saying something like, "Hi I'm Bradley, please contact my husband at [email protected][###] about the price of your TRAILER as he’s interested." Yeah right, I’m Bradley with a husband wanting a trailer! And TRAILER was in all caps! You can tell it’s some kind of automated message but honestly, why do they even bother trying?

Got a message from this number saying he was out at sea, working as a marine engineer. He wanted me to reply via email. His English was awful, and he was interested in buying my car listed on Gumtree for his son. Then he asked for my PayPal email, saying he'd send the money and organise someone to pick up the car. Feels dodgy to me, so no way I'm getting involved. Watch out!

Got a message after advertising my motorbike on Gumtree. The person sent an email as [email protected] gmail[###] asking what my final price was. Seems like an automated reply and it came through at 1.20 in the morning, so I just ignored it.

I put an ad up on Gumtree, and they messaged saying I should only reply through email - definite scammers!! Got an email back that said: "Hi, I'm Lara Johnson. Sorry, I can't come and check the item in person because I'm currently serving in the British Army as an Artillery Logistics Specialist and am deployed abroad on active duty. Things are pretty hectic here with loads of restrictions and no calls allowed for security reasons. The internet is the only safe way I can communicate right now." Then it said, "Let’s continue this..." Dodgy if you ask me!

I’m happy to pay the price you’re asking. Also, I’d prefer to use PayPal as my payment method, as it’s the safest option I know for sending money online. Someone called wanting to buy my caravan and asked for my Paypal info, which seemed fishy so I didn’t go along with it. I’ve reported it to the cops now. If you’ve got similar calls, please report them too - we need to stop these scams before someone really gets hurt.

I got a text about a Gumtree ad from a Sheffield-based number: +44 1143599246. They told me to email johnlarsen1890@gmail[###], wanting to buy stuff without actually checking it out first and asked for all my personal info. I looked into it and found out over 1,700 people have reported problems with that number.

Yesterday, on 06/08/2017, someone called me saying they were interested in buying my car. He said his name was James and mentioned he’s in a wheelchair. I’d strongly advise not to trust him or hand over anything.
