Got a call from someone with an accent, said they were from Thames Water. They wrongly claimed we'd been given too much of a refund after we moved and wanted us to send them over £100. They also tried to get personal details like birthday and old address, which we refused to give, but they kept pushing even though that was meant to be their security check. We just ended the call. Definitely a scam.

Ayer said they were from Domestic & General, telling me my cooker warranty had expired and asked if I wanted to extend it. Sounded like a call centre for sure, but I have Sky Talk Shield and it showed exactly who was calling before I answered, so I thought it might be legit. I still didnt bother renewing the warranty and got the usual hard sell!

A young woman claiming to be from Thames Water called me and sounded really believable. Since we’d just had a water meter fitted, I thought it was a genuine follow-up. The number had rung me 6 times over 3 days. Foolishly, I gave her my address and name. I only got suspicious when she insisted I pay my bill straight away (it’s not even due for another month!) and got a bit snappy when I asked why I should pay over the phone when I usually do it online. They said they were from Marathon Utility or something like that, working with Eon, and wanted to replace my electric meter cos it's apparently outdated. Told me I had to be home even though the meter's outside my property. Booked a slot and they asked me to verify the first line of my address plus postcode. I told them they should already have that info. They then said data protection rules stop them from confirming my address. I explained that those rules are meant to protect ME from misuse of my details, so arranging a visit with me shouldn’t be breaking any data protection laws.

I got a call saying they were coming to fit a new electric meter for E On, who is my provider. They asked me to verify some details but I told them no. After that, they called me back. I rang E On myself and they told me the firm calling, something like Morrisons or Marathon Utility, works with them for meter fittings and mine does need updating. So it seems the number is legit. Still, I’d be careful about sharing my details if the call came out of the blue!
