The caller kept insisting on getting a contact number, so I told him the number he was calling from was the landline. Got a call from a woman speaking with an Indian accent. She started off saying she was from our energy provider, warning the meter would be cut off because of unpaid bills. When I challenged her on it, she suddenly changed tactics and tried to pitch me a deal for cheaper electricity, claiming our current supplier was overcharging based on estimated readings. She did have the meter number and some bank info. But the meter reading she gave was totally wrong. She refused to tell me her name or what company she worked for.

I pressed further and asked for the name of this ‘supplier,’ to which they replied, rather erroneously, British Gas. I had to laugh - clearly, they hadn’t done their homework, as I don’t even use them! I promptly hung up. Then, they rang my business line again, insisting they required my meter number because there was a supposed fault and an engineer was needed for a replacement. Caller jumped straight to asking for my meter readings without even introducing herself. I just said, "No thanks," and ended the call. Honestly, they seem to have dropped all the pleasantries these days!

Got loads of calls over and over asking for meter readings. They were really cagey about which company they worked for. Couldn’t even give a name of anyone from our company they supposedly knew. Eventually they said they were with ‘British Gas’. I told them we don’t use them. Then the call just cut off. I’m pretty sure they’ll try again in a couple of days.

I just got a call from a guy with an Indian accent claiming to be from British Gas asking for a meter reading. I told him I don't even have British Gas. Then he said "yes, I know" or something like that. I hung up straight away, felt like a total scam.

Told her to stop calling, and even though I blocked the number, she phoned back again!

Then they asked about our electricity provider, saying we needed to switch straight away now we’re a Ltd company, and promised to send over new paperwork. Pure scam, just ended the call right away.

I got a call from someone who already knew where I live, even my postcode. She claimed she needed a meter reading and when I asked which company she was with, she said EON. Funny enough, I actually am with EON but I didn’t share any details and ended the call right away. Honestly, there's no point in giving these types of callers the time of day. I submit meter readings to my supplier every month, so there’s just no reason for them to be ringing me.

These calls are total scams. If you get one, you should report it straight away using the platform the cyber crime police have set up for the public to flag scams like this. Just search for ‘action fraud’ and visit the official UK police website. Then head to the phishing report page and scroll to the bottom where you can fill out a quick form. It’s also worth having a look at the site’s news updates for recent info.

I received a rather dubious phone call purporting to be from Companies House, requesting confirmation of details for the purpose of issuing a Company Registration number. They proceeded to inquire about our electricity provider, insisting it was imperative to make a switch now that we were transitioning to a limited company. Shortly thereafter, I received another call from someone claiming to be from "British Gas" who echoed these demands for information and verification. At first, I was a bit taken in (thankfully, I didn’t divulge too much), but my instincts kicked in, and I contacted British Gas directly to verify the authenticity of the call. They reassured me that such outreach wouldn’t come from them, and explained these callers - a gentleman named Levi among them - were merely brokers fishing for unsuspecting businesses like ours. They persistently bombard you with calls until you confront them about their scamming tactics - and lo and behold, I haven’t heard a peep from them since!

First they call asking for a specific person. When you say that nobody by that name is here, they then ask for the manager or owner of the company. When you question them about the business they claim to represent, they give a random name. Then, after you say that name isn’t correct, I ask why they can’t just answer the initial question properly. It feels like they’re trying to confuse me with a runaround. I just tell them to quit with the scam and stop ringing. They manage to call me about 5 to 10 times every day.
