9 yearsThis afternoon, my elderly mother received a phone call from an Indian gentleman who managed to persuade her that her computer issues were real, claiming to be from BT. Despite her numerous attempts to hang up the phone, he persisted and rang back repeatedly. After about an hour and several frustrating calls, I finally arrived and was able to put an end to his relentless pestering. I can't express how distressed my mother was by the whole ordeal. He started rambling on about some dodgy attempt to breach my internet connection and insisted I needed to get to my computer and power it up. I mentioned it was situated in another room and that I wasn’t equipped with a mobile, which left him scratching his head about how he’d sort the issue out. The caller went on to say that our broadband would be out of action for a whole ten days due to some problems and a supposed malware issue. He suggested that our connection had been compromised from abroad. Curiously, he inquired about the devices we utilise for internet connectivity and how we typically use the internet-mentioning activities like emailing and banking. At one point, he specifically asked if we bank with NatWest, alleging something about online banking being picked up on our connection. When I informed him that we don't bank with NatWest, he pressed on for which banks we do use! I promptly declined to share any of that information. After mumbling something unintelligible, he subsequently hung up.
