Got a call from a US number claiming to be BT. They told me my internet was going to be disconnected starting today. Seemed dodgy to me.

Most of the time I just keep quiet and the caller hangs up - same thing happened this time. A lot of these calls come from automated call centres and respond to sound. To deal with it I use the call blocking from my network, Talk Talk. Just dial 14258 and if they ring back they get a busy tone.
