Got called 5 times today by someone with an Indian accent claiming to be from Windows - total scam!

My mother-in-law got a phone call from a bloke saying her computer was full of illegal sites and that he was coming over to remove them. She’s 81 and lives with her son and me, and she doesn’t even use the internet much - just plays solitaire occasionally. We have no idea how they found her number. She ended the call, but the man rang straight back after about 10 seconds. This time her cousin answered and told the guy to stop calling or she’d report him to the police, then hung up. Thankfully, he hasn’t bothered since. Honestly, it’s really important that these scammers stop targeting elderly people like her.

The bloke claimed he was with some Windows support, mentioned my partner's last name, and then asked me to use my computer. I wasn't having any of it and said no, then he just ended the call.

I think the 989-832-8978 number from Midland MI is being used for spoofing. It’s likely the real owner has nothing to do with the scam but might’ve got flooded with calls and ended up cutting off the service. If you want to understand more about this kind of trick, try googling it.

Here’s a couple of tricks you can try: First, tell them they’ve got the wrong person but you’ll check if the person’s around, then just put the phone down quietly and let it ring out for a bit - that’ll eat up their time for sure. Another idea is to play along, feed them nonsense, act a bit slow, and see how long you can keep them chatting away. Also, you could ask them some pretty personal questions back. If they get annoyed, just remind them they’re the ones who called first.

I've told them plenty of times to stop ringing me, and they just don't listen. I'm already on the do-not-call list. Honestly, I wish someone would teach them a proper lesson!

It's ridiculous that spoofing a name and number on Caller ID isn't illegal. These calls actually come from a dodgy call centre somewhere in India, but the number makes it seem like they're calling from Midland, Michigan. They’re not! It’s some jerk off in a rubbish part of India pretending to be legit.

If our politicians would stop being so useless and actually put laws in place, with fines and jail time for phone company bosses who let crooks pass as real businesses, maybe this nonsense would stop. Seriously, all the time we waste dealing with these scams costs the economy way more than the unlucky muppets who get tricked.

Since 12/12/2014, I've had nine calls from this number. Whenever someone actually answers, I tell them to take me off their calling list. They claim to be from Windows Support. The last time I spoke to a caller, I asked to talk with their supervisor, and they said they themselves were the manager. Then I asked for a name and callback number; he said his name was David Ben and gave me a number starting with 770. When I rang it back, it was someone’s home in Georgia. From the start, this felt like a con. I’ve also filed a complaint with the DO NOT CALL registry, but not sure if it helps at all. It's getting quite tiresome now!

Oi, they need to quit calling me!! Today alone, I've had 7 calls from them. Most times, when I pick up, there’s no one there but the last time, some bloke pretended to be from Windows Support. I told him straight up he’s a scammer, and then he just kept shouting "F___ YOU!!!" at me again and again. Do I really have to deal with this rubbish? They use loads of different numbers for these scams, and I can only block so many. It’s ridiculous I have to pay to stop these unwanted calls.

Got a call from some guy who said his name was David and he was based in London, but his English was really poor. He started off saying he was from some Windows Technical Centre but then said he’s not related to Microsoft at all. Then suddenly he claimed he actually was! When I mentioned I couldn’t hear him properly, he told me the problem was with my ear. Once I called him out for being a scammer, he threatened to cancel my licence right away and said my computer would stop working!!!

Today’s Tuesday, 12/2/14, about 4.24 in the afternoon. I got a call from a lady with a strong Indian accent who claimed to be from Windows. When I replied curtly with “What do you want?” she just cut the call straight away.

Had a call from this number, some Indian accent on the other end. I wouldn't let her get into my PC, and next thing she’s telling me to go jump in a lake! Couldn’t stop chuckling after that one.

Over the past few days, I’ve had this number ring me up three times, even on Thanksgiving. Each time, a guy with quite a strong Indian accent claims he's "John" from some computer company, telling me my PC is infected with a virus. I called him out saying it’s obviously a scam, which just made him get really rude and defensive. The next call, when I asked for his real name, he hesitated with an “uhh…,” then finally said "Obama." We had a bit of a spat again, and he was really disrespectful, so I just hung up. I tried contacting my phone provider about blocking the number, but they said I’d have to pay more to do that. So frustrating!
